vidding

right. i'll discuss vidding, since i've been into that recently. i started vidding on new year's day. i got my new laptop a couple of days before that. let me just rave over it for a minute. the computer speed is great, and the graphics are not bad too. to top it all off, it was pretty cheap. thank god for my brother. i know nothing about computers.

i don't really know where to begin, because vidding means quite a lot to me. i haven't really explained to anyone why i enjoy vidding so much. it's hard to put my adoration towards it into words. okay, this will be another post that's not orderly. god knows my organisational skills disappear once i think about things that i love.

quite often, vidding gives me random bursts of excitement. i was chatting with my best friend about something completely unrelated to vidding when i suddenly thought of vidding and squealed happily. that's how much i like it. it's comparable to the exhilaration i used to feel thanks to wow.

this began nearly a decade ago. i used to watch the nightly hongkong dramas together with the rest of my family. those were some damn good times. we seldom ever watch things together anymore. i digressed. whenever a song was played, i'd instinctively create a small video in my head. sometimes the content of the vids was fictional characters, sometimes it was actual happenings in my life. the short (usually filled with spoilers) introductory videos at the start of each of the hk dramas also influenced my taste in fanvids. i like songs with clear, traditional, dramatic climaxes. eg: conventional canto pop. do you get me?

this habit stayed with me throughout secondary school.

then, finally, i managed to make my first fanvid this year! it took me 1 full day to learn the basics of sony vegas, so i could work on my first vid. the tricks are not too difficult to master. actually, to me, it was almost too easy. part of the reason is the abundance of resources online! there are so many good tutorials on youtube alone. you don't really have an excuse to be /terrible/ at it, unless you're not really tech-savvy, or truly interested in vidding. sadly most fanvids i find on youtube are of abysmal quality. i'm not saying that mine are great. i know they are far from it. but to me, they are, at the very least, decent. the standard of fanvids is about the same as that of fanfics, hahaha.

yeah, i have nothing much to say about vidding. i'll just briefly explain what i like so much about it before i turn off my computer.

i like digital art. to me, vidding is digital art. there is a lot of contemplation involved. choosing the correct font is in and of itself hard. some fonts look good only in small screen, for example. sometimes the text in your videos look tolerable but they lack the oomph. perfectly matching word art to the video and song is hard.

you also have to select appropriate videos. i dislike this part of the vidding process the most. if you're making a vid on dramas, tv shows or movies, this part wouldn't be too icky. though you'd have to trawl through many hours' worth of scenes, at least you actually have the luxury of selecting from thousands of scenes. vidding idols (especially ones that aren't immensely popular), etc, is actually the worst. ugh.

of course, the sequence of the scenes also matters dearly. you can kill the mood by merely switching the positions of two videos, for instance.

transitions. transitions also contribute to the overall aura of the video.

lastly, the music.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaha!
