Me being angry and ranty
Wednesday, 2 September 2015 | 0 letters
Hello. Today I am going to talk about something that pissed me off recently!

To exemplify today's rant, I'll use Suho as the main subject. Yes, I am biased towards him. But that alone does not invalidate what I'm about to say.

Let me draw the line between obnoxious presumptions and acceptable opinions. There is a difference between
"A is fake."
and
"A seems like a fake person to me. But I don't know enough, so I can't be certain."

It's appalling to hear people around me (I would include online comments here too but what's new, it's the Internet) confidently brushing off Su's leadership capabilities! News flash: they are celebrities and you'll never know even 5% of what truly happens off camera!

You can, however, say:
I think he isn't a good leader. I think he is lacking in _____ areas.

There is a difference! BUT it's unacceptable to post that online based on shallow evidence especially on online platforms where idols can actually READ those criticisms.
You know, not everyone is strong enough to ignore online vitriol. It does constitute cyber bullying.

So, most fundamentally, when such hate reaches idols, it hurts them. Unless their actions /clearly/ warrant highly negative remarks, it is wrong to post such stuffs online.
If you have a constructive criticism, then sure, go ahead. No one will stop you.

Secondly, you are responsible for the influence that your opinions have on other people. If you know that publicizing your (groundless) opinion will encourage more unwarranted hate, then you should NOT discuss it publicly. Your intent may not be bad but if you KNOW that your words will generate an undesirable impact then you have to stop and rethink.

Another classic example is the hate that Anne Hathaway receives for everything! Ranging preparing her Oscar speech to starving herself so she will look as impoverished as her character in Les Miserables! Look how quickly childish hate can spread. You don't want to be a part of that.

(At this juncture I would like to say I am guilty of being too presumptuous and judgmental but I am working on it. Nowadays, I can safely say I DON'T confidently criticize idols like it's the truth.)

We all have our own opinions. We are entitled to them, YDS. But sometimes you can generate unwanted negativity by simply sharing them online/ with your friends, especially if your friends are people who are easily swayed by lousy (non-existent) evidence. We are easily influenced, okay. So we remain accountable for HOW we publicize our opinions. We are not very discerning or rational.

That being said, of course you aren't at fault if people twist your words to suit their own cause. So, when you dislike a celebrity based on gut feeling, like most occasionally do, you must recognize that you actually have no evidence to back up your feeling.

It's more like
I think he is _______ but obviously I don't know enough to conclusively judge him.
Rather than
I think he is _____ therefore he is.

See how people tend to go around in circles when they try to explain their irrational stand!
OKAY! I am done being civil now. The next person who insults my bbs confidently will get a tongue-lashing from me, unless you have real evidence.

Come, let me debunk all the usual rubbish people like to say abt Suho.

"He's a terrible leader. He doesn't have charisma. Look at the way the members trample all over him."

Nice job. Now sit down and let me show you the other end of the spectrum.
*insert all the real interviews in which members said exo's livelihood would've plunged w/o susu* see! He's a great leader.

And you know you can't deny that if you are guilty of the former because both similarly analyse his ability based on isolated examples/ qualities.

Wow I'm more pissed that I thought I was. *sighs heavily* now let me move onto the other thing that people like to say about celebrities! (And Su) they claim he is fake.

You think he's fake. You don't know whether he's fake. See the distinction between an opinion and a fact? Don't speak like your opinion is a fact. And in case you haven't realized, we only see a very curated image of these idols. Nearly all of them ARE putting on a front.
Then you may argue that he IS faker than the rest. Are you a barometer that can sense artificiality? I didn't know you have the capability of measuring how artificial these fake personas are. So if you think he's fake, admit it, you only THINK he is fake. I THINK he isn't fake. Neither of us can prove that he is/ isn't fake. Let's make peace with that.

So don't you dare tell me
"Suho IS fake!"

It upsets me a lot because people around me PUT HIM DOWN like there's no tomorrow. Please. Stop. It is
1) socially unacceptable to make jabs at your friend's bias w/o justification
2) being mean to suho.

I simply can't forget okay, when people zero in on him just to negate his abilities :-(.
Yup. Let's be merry and stop being mean. Criticize constructively. Accept that your opinion on idols usually isn't backed by anything, really.

In a nutshell: don't criticize idols like your opinion is a fact unless there is clear evidence.
I'm not going to lie and pretend I'm big-hearted because I am NOT. I dislike it when people insult someone I like a lot. But it doesn't rile me up. And I /know/ I have to suck it up. People are entitled to their own opinions. So a "Suho doesn't seem like a good leader." doesn't piss me off.

What truly riles me up is the shameless confidence accompanying those insults.
I had to refrain from inserting very sarcastic remarks in this post.

Things not within my control.
You know when you feel like you're your biggest obstacle? (Woah biggest got autocorrected to nuggets. -_-) ok I guess people do feel that way quite often bahaha. We truly are our own enemies and saviors.
If you can't overcome yourself, you're never going to see how capable you really are. You actually are capable of greater kindness, diligence and perseverance than whatever you've been exhibiting.
Things have been quite tiring recently. Exams. Exams. God. I just realized this is going to last ONE MONTH.
